Dry Skin on the scrotum

by e_help, Oct 06, 2009 01:12PM
This is not so much a question, as it is a note to help others with the same issue.

I recently noticed that I have dry, flaky, almost crystalized skin peeling off a small area in the front part of my scrotum.  At times it was itchy and I guess I scratched more when I slept, cause i started to get scrath shaped scabbing. Looked like it was attacked by a cat or somthing. I tried simple hand lotions, and baby oil, but neither helped fr more than an hour at a time, with the condition pretty much staying exactly the same, or maybe even a little worse.

he one thing that worked, very quickly at that, is a steriod cream.  My girlfriend has eczema and she has a steroid cream that she was prescribed, which she swears by.  She told me to try it and see what happened.  Of course, I just wanted to get rid of this stuff, not only was it embarrassing, but it was becomming very uncomfortable.

Anyway, after only 1 day of usig a small amount, it started getting better, by the third application (2 days later)., it was pretty much gone, and my skin there was back to normal.

The cream I used goes by the commercial name of "Betaderm", but the chemical name is Betamethasone Valerate, Ointment USP, 0.1%.

I assume this comes in different strengths, but i hear this is a stronger version, and it was prescribed.  It's not available without a prescription, (I may be wrong, but this is what I hear).

So anyone having these issues, please see your doctor and see what he/she says.  Mention this steriod cream, they'l know what you're talking about, and see if they recommend it.  I know it works like a  dream for me.

Regards,

E.

To: e_help,
Hello,
They symptoms are suggestive of eczema. Wash the areas several times with fresh water. Do not use any cosmetic products at the sites. You can apply some calamine lotion at the rash as it will help in soothing the skin. You can take some OTC oral antihistamine medications like Benadryl or Claritin and see if it helps.

For mild-moderate eczema a weak steroid may be used (e.g. hydrocortisone as dermacort), whilst more severe cases require a higher-potency steroid (e.g. clobetasol propionate, fluocinonide). Eczema can be exacerbated by dryness of the skin. Use good quality moisturizers to prevent moisture loss from the skin.

If still the symptoms do not improve then please get a clinical examination done by a dermatologist.

I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep me posted in case you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
