Effect of accutane on post cosmetic surgery healing

Hi,

I had a cyst wall removed from my nose on July 30, 2001, thus leaving a scar which the cosmetic surgeon said will heal in time.  I started a treatment of accutane 40mg on September 7, 2001 which is about 1 month and 1 week after the surgery.  My dermatologist said it shouldn't effect the healing of the scar on my nose but the cosmetic surgeon told me to wait two months before going on accutane.

I have been on accutane now for 10 days.  I want to know if accutane will inhibit the scar on my nose from healing and prevent the scar tissue from smoothing out (I've been using Mederma on it).  I'm really worried about having a permanent raised scar, especially on my nose!  I need a third opinion please!  If you think I should stop the accutane treatment I will do so right away.

Thank you so much!

The usualy recommendation is not to have cosmetic surgical procedures during Accutane treatment or for 6 months after, but I haven't seen any information on the other way around--when there's surgery first and then Accutane.  It's probably OK, but I just don't know for sure.

If you can put off the therapy, I would consider doing so.  On the other hand, if your acne is so severe that you may dvelop scarring while you wait, that would change things.  I would advise you to contact your dermatologist.  Perhpas he or she can call the manufacturer, Roche Laboratories, to ask whether they have any specific data bearing on your situation.

Best.
