Extreme Eczema on hands

Extreme Eczema on hands

I have had a problem with extremely dry, chapped fingertips for over 5 years now.

Currently this is restricted to Right hand thumb & index figer (tips). I have consulted many doctors and used many medicines including creams etc but things get settled for a few days and get back agaain. The skin after a few days becomes really hard and with just a small scrach breaks, which results in pain.

Need urgent help! Please.

Thanks

Hi Dimple,
How are you feeling now?
I am sure most of the underlined treatment you would have taken, but just a reminder.
A first line of defense against eczema is to modify and step up your hygiene routine. People with eczema are highly susceptible to harsh, drying soaps. Irritants in your clothing can aggravate the condition. Skin moisture is crucial and with dry skin comes an eczema flare-up. Hot water can also dry out your skin, so opt for a cool bath. Make heavy moisturizers a part of your daily routine. You can also apply hydrocortisone cream to eczema areas. This home eczema treatment routine will benefit and help keep mild cases of eczema under control.
Check to see if a food allergy could be the cause of your eczema.
I think in your case you should try for ultraviolet light eczema treatment.
This type of eczema treatment is a last resort and should be discussed with a physician and dermatologist.
Hope this helps.
Bye.

The products i recommend for ezcema (eczema) are those by Oiltum, Eucerin or Aveeno. Always wear gloves when washing up or doing household chores especially if you use chemicals or bleach. Use gentle products in the shower like ones made by the companies i mentioned above. I use Elizabeth Arden 8 hour handcream, it is expensive but worth it. Wash your hands with a gentle product, dry them gently but completely, then apply your chosen treatment. Keep a supply of hand cream in your bag and re-apply liberally throughout the day. As your condition is confined to your hands it may be contact dermatitis, in which case you may be able to identify the allergan and avoid it. If your skin gets really bad use hydrocortisone 1% cream, but this is not recommended for long term use.

Thanks for all your suggestions! I live in New Delhi & to be honest no Doctor has even mentioned about the ultraviolet light eczema treatment. I shall certainly ask them and keep you posted.

Good wishes,

I forgot to mention, according to my doctor this is : dyshidrotic eczema. They haven't done any tests or anything but this was diagnosed by them, the last time I visited them.

Thought I must let you know.

Does anyone of you have any comments on this "dyshidrotic eczema".

Thanks for letting me know.

Cheers!

Hi Dimple,
You have got a lovely name.
Dyshidrotic eczema is a recurrent form of vesicular palmo or plantar dermatitis of unknown etiology.
Does anybody in family have similar symptoms?
It is known for this disease to be associated in family members.
Emotional, Environmental and other factors irritating skin can cause symptoms.
Patients usually complain about pruritis and skin disease of palm or foot region.
In 80% of cases hands are involved and feet are involved in isolated form only in 10% of cases.
In its extreme form nails can also get infected.
Topical steroids and systemic steroids are essential for management and should be included in any regimen.
Hand and/or foot UVA therapy (UVA or UVA1 alone or with oral or topical psoralen) improves the eruption and pruritus when administered 2-3 times per week.
An allergist can be consulted.
Keep me informed about your disease progression.
