Extreme Itching upper arm

by whatzit, Feb 05, 2008 06:41PM
During the winter (not every one but a number) I have experienced a sharp pin point extreme itch on the outside of my left upper arm. This is hard to ignore and upon vigorous scratching a very small sore appears. This occurs a number of times consequently leaving me with intense itching in several spots in this area. It seems to occur mostly at night waking me from sleep. This has been happening off and on for about 12 years.  The first time it happened I had the feeling it was the result of an extreme sun rash I had experience from a Mexico vacation. I hadn't had any occurances for awhile until last year, and then again this year to a lengthier degree. Now it has started to appear on my right upper arm also. In the past it seemed to go away on its own. I forget about it when it isn't bothering me.  It seems to be getting a little better now after about 2 months. Before I scratch like crazy there is nothing to indicate I have a rash or why I should itch so. I talked to my doctor about it but at the time there was nothing showing and she had no suggestions. I have tried cortizone, moisturizers, cool baths, ice packs, but nothing really works.  I end up taking Ibuprofin (as it makes me sleepy) in order to get some sleep. When it's bad it's so bad ... then it's gone?????

Hi,

Do you have any history of allergies?

This may be allergic dermatitis. You haven't mentioned of any excoriations, vesicles or crusting. Have you noted some possible triggers? Does cold trigger the condition and always in the same location?

Do keep us posted.

Since my extreme episodes seem to always happen at night I have the feeling that heat is a trigger. I have gone the route of changing detergents etc.  I cannot sleep with anything on my arms which adds to my feeling that heat is a culprit. It is always in the same area ... the right upper arm somewhat on the front side as opposed to the back. I have scratched the pin point itching to  where a small round excoriated area appears. At times this even draws a small amount of blood or serous fluid that does form a crust of sorts. Since there are only about 4 of these points it is not like I have a crusty, weepy rash. At most it is unnoticeable.  that's what is so strange ... the itching seems to come from separate exact points.  I live in Minnesota so winter skin is always a possiblity but since the area is so isolated I doubt this is the problem.  Like I had mentioned when it wakes me at night I can't explain how crazy it makes me. As I type this I have absolutely no symptoms nor have I had any today. Thanks for you response Vanessa.

I have a lot of itching on my arms and back, but it's a condition called keratosis pilaris.  I have had it all my life.  The doctor gave me something, but to be honest, the most relief I get is from using the Gold Bond Lotion in the green bottle.  I buy a lot of it!
