Eyelash loss

by honduras, Aug 01, 2005 12:00AM
I am seeking a diagnosis and a cure. I have sporadic eyelash loss...usuallu occuring in patches, leaving a gap. Recently it has worsened and one eyelid is alsmost devoid of eyelashes. This is accompanied by no other symtomss, i.e. crusting, reddness, etc. No obvious sign of infection. This began about 5 years ago during the time after my first visits to Honduras. I have been living here as a medical missionary since late 1999. It is difficult to seek medical attention for this here. It has been suggested that this was caused by some mite. I am at a loss and can not find any information to help me. I just want to be rid of whatever is the causative agent.

I doubt there is a causative agent.  Alopecia is a condition that causes patchy hair loss, and that may be your problem.  Cause unknown, spontaneous regrowth common.  Sometimes people unconsciously rub their lashes and they fall out.  Might that conceivably be your problem?  I don't think you need to be concerned about infection, though.  For specific diagnosis, a doctor will need to have a look.  If a doctor is not accessible, perhaps a digital photo sent to one might be of use.

Best.
