FOLLOW UP QUESTION/SCROTUM,PENUS REDNESS

THE DERMATOLGIST ALSO THOUGHT IT AS A YEAST INFECTION AND PRESCRIBED 2.5% FLUOCINE ACETONIDE AS A TOPICAL TREATMENT AND AN ORAL MEDICATION(NISTATIN 500000U)three times/day.
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION OF THESE MEDICATIONS AND HOW DOES THIS ORAL MED. COMPARE TO A SINGLE DOSE OF FLUCONAZOLE?

by Alan Rockoff, MD, Feb 25, 2003 12:00AM
Not terribly well, actually.  First, fluocinolone acetonide is a steroid, and steroids make yeasts worse.  Second, Nystatin is not absorbed into the body--it works for the inside of the mouth, but doesn't get absorbed into the bloodstream, so it shouldn't be very helpful against yeasts elsewhere.  Diflucan is far more effective systemically (throughout the body.)

I suggest that you contact the dermatologist and ask him about these matters.  It's possible he or she had something else in mind, and can explain the rationale for recommending this particular treatment regimen.  You might also ask whether a yeast culture was done, and when follw-up is scheduled to check on how treatment is doing.

Best.
