Finger sores that won't heal

My father had a small blood dot on his finger.  The tip and the nail of the finger turned black and the skin sloughed off.  The new skin is raw and bloody and will not heal.  They have ruled out any circulation problems.  Now it is happening to two more fingers.  Has anyone seen this before or have any idea what could be causing this?

Thank you for taking the time to comment.  I will tell him to mention this to his doctor.

I would think of an auto immune bullous pemphigoid of nail, albeit rarely occurring.
