Fingernail problem

Ever since I can remember, on my thumbnail and big-toe nail, there has been a strange deterioration.  It looks like a series of grooves in the center of the nail  (see attached pictures).  My fingernails aren't weak or brittle and they're not really falling off or anything.  I don't think it's anything serious, but I've always been curious what it is.  If anybody could help at all, that would be great.

Hi,

This appears to be only localized in the nails then?

This may not be very urgent but the length of time that this has been present suggests that this may be due to a chronic skin condition. Fungal infections and psoriasis (our main differentials) may be influenced by external triggers like temperature, trauma and certain stressors.

I suggest that you have this assessed by your physician so you may be prescribed with the right medications.Topical corticosteroids may be necessary. For conditions affecting the nails however, you may need a more potent corticosteroid or a higher dose of the usual topical medications for good absorption.

I don't really have any other symptoms.  I don't know if this has been present since birth, but I remember noticing it in 4th grade, it happened every winter and went away during the summer, but since a few years ago, it's been happening constantly.

Hi,

The appearance of one's nails may give a picture of one's general health. Ridges, pits, thickening or thinning of nails may suggest an underlying infection, kidney disease or nutrient deficiency. In your case, differentials will be a fungal infection, psoriasis or it may be a benign presentation of an underlying infection.

Do you have any other associated signs or symptoms like a rash or scaly plaque in other parts of the body?

If this condition has been present since birth or since you were younger and there were no other significant medical events, this may not be something urgent for it may be likely a benign condition.
