Folliculitis

I had a small red bump in my pubic area last night which I assumed was an ingrown hair, have had that before and they go away in a couple of days. Today it has grown throughout the day until it is a lump slightly larger than a peanut, it is red and it HURTS. My doctor looked at it for about 5 seconds and said it was folliculitis, prescribed some antibiotics and said if it isn't better in a week he will have to lance it. I am concerned and confused. Is it likely folliculitis, could it be a cyst or ingrown hair? I hate medical procedures and the idea of lancing sounds just horrible.
