Fordyce's Condition

by Todd S., May 17, 2005 12:00AM
I have Fordyce's condition.  Sebaceous glands on my lips.  I am  thinking of getting rid of them, I heard a laser works.

My questions:

1. If I use a laser, will the laser get all of them?

2. After getting the laser treatment, CAN THEY COME BACK AND/OR CAN NEW ONES APPEAR ANYWAY? - (if so, it doesn't make sense to do it)

3. Is there a chance the laser can scar my lips?

Please answer all the questions as I am trying to figure out if I should do this.

Thank you for your time, I appreciate you doing this.

Todd

I don't think laser treatment is worth doing in this condition.  Even if it gets rid of them, they are likely to recur.  (I assume, by the way, that you are referring to a carbon dioxide or erbium laser.)  I suggest you ask the doctor who is recommending this procedure how successful he or she has been, and what complications, if any, have resulted.  Even if the spots recur, you might want to give it a shot, in the absence of any other alternative, since there isn't any.  Superficial laser removals do tend to be quite safe, at least.

Best.
