Found Bald Spot, Plz Help!

by OnlyJosh, Jul 24, 2007 11:51PM
I am a 21 year old Male who up until a few months ago had no problem with balding. I was getting my hair cut relatively short and my hair dresser noticied I had a bald spot on the back of my head in the middle down near my trim line about the size of a nickel. I kinda ignored it figuring it would grow back but it has been about 1 month now and my hair is longer but the bald spot is balder then bald and seems to be getting bigger according to my girlfriend (as I cannot see the back of my head except using 2 mirrors witch makes it still really hard to see).

Since this bald spot has been here. It has been making my self confidence go down alot. My looks mean alot me. I am always cut & clean so i know when something isn't right on my body. I have asked few people about my situation and they said i couldn't be going bald because balding doesn't start in the lower back of guy's heads. Usually on the top or front of there heads. I was just wondering what the cause for this is and if it can be anything serious or just stress related possibly?

Thank You very much.

This sounds like Alopecia. Do you have allot of stress at the moment. Many people have this when they are stress. My sister had it when she was about to deliver and again when my mother passed. A friend had it when he was engaged and nervous about the wedding.
This goes away in a month or so.

What did the doc really all say once he found out that you have Alopecia? How much does the shots cost to get it done monthly? I may want to check into this. I also hope the best for you. Hopefully the shot of w/e he is giving you will treat you.

Thank you!

Doc told me that I have to take cortazon shots and I alredy have taken 4 shots. Since I don`t have  insurance  it cost  $95.00 every time . . If you have insurance It will be less of course but I am at the point right now when I `ll do anything to fix that problem.

it is cortisone or other variations of steroids,  that they inject. alopecia areota is what it sounds like to me. the fee can vary. usually a doctor will reduce the rates if they find out you are uninsured, but even if you were, most policies won't cover the treatment since it is usually cosmetic.

you should have it looked at though, just in case there is a ringworm, which can also cause circular patches of hair loss.

alopecia is not contagious and happens for many reasons, stress is a factor.

What kind of doctor should i look into seeing? I'm not sure since there are all kinds for tons of different things...

I don't have a family doc of my own. So probabley even before being able to be looked at i would need some type of down payment..

by chellybeans, Jul 26, 2007 08:06PM
a dermatologist would be able to handle this and is used to seeing it. if you went to a general practitioner they may want to run a few expensive tests beforehand.

i would call afew local derm offices and ask them about what the cost would be for a self pay new patient needing treatment for alopecia areota.

then try to figure out if they will work out a payment pplan. plan to take justa  bit more money with you and make sure you let the doctor know that it is a stretch for you to be self pay and covering very much medical care.

usually they will work with you.

Hi I am sorry but from my experience /I have alopecia areata/ doctor does not care If you can or can not afford to pay for it . Hope you will be more lucky than I am. I am from NY and in my area is not many dermatologist so I am kind of forced to stay with the one I have. You definitely should see dermatologist  .
My doc told me that these shots should work but it is different in each case how long you have to take it. Believe me I read everything I possibly could about alopecia. So  dont wait but go. I am sorry for my mistakes I am in this country only one year so I can write too good but I know exactly how you feel since I have the same problem. Good luck  to you!

by OnlyJosh, Jul 29, 2007 10:51PM
Now i don't see the doctor until he 8th but people have been telling me to try B6? That will help my body and should help my hair grown back in... What do you think? Also im not sure what i should buy because there is different "MG" per bottles. Here is a link i found on them...

http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/search/en/query.jsp?q=B6&x=0&y=0&intsource=main

Thank u for your help.

by Natty7, Jul 30, 2007 08:21PM
you can buy  it. I use to take B6 even before I had my hair problem .It can`t hurt to try but it will not help your hair to grow back if you have alopecia .

by OnlyJosh, Aug 09, 2007 12:18PM
Well i went to my doctors appointment. He said there isn't really anything i can do. Its common and it will go away on its own and maybe come back down the road.. Its just something i have to wait it out on until it goes away...

I don't feel really good about it since i have to wait until it goes away..But i guess theres nothing i can do ..

And now I'm taking B6 and Complete Multivitamin

what?! what kind of doctor did you see?

Umm.. I seen a MD doctor... Why do u think he is wrong??

They wanted me to start out seeing a Md doctor first.

He said it has even happen to him since we was a little kid.. It has gone away and came back through out his life..

And im already doing a payment plan through them now.

by chellybeans, Aug 10, 2007 07:15AM
who is they that anted you to see a md first? and md simply means medical doctor.was it a general practitioner?  you need to be treated by a dermatologist for this condition.seeing a general practitioner is like going to wal mart to get the engine fixed on a very expensive luxury car from another country, sure they can give it a shot, but they probably have almost no experience and none of the tools they need.  it is not something you should have to just wait for to go away.

i am confused about why you had to go to a "md doctor". if you are self pay you can go to any type of doctor you would like as long as they are accepting new patients and have an opening.

i can't imagine what sort of doctor would say his hair has randomly been falling out in patches since childhood and he has just waited for it to go away and come another time. that makes no sense at all!
