Got facial mole removed and have a concern

by oschrndz, Jul 16, 2008 10:41PM
I had a facial mole removed from the side bridge of my nose. The mole was 0.5 cm in diameter. I don't know the name of the technique the dermatologist used to remove the mole but he "shaved" it off. When he was doing it, to me it felt like he was cutting a bit, scrapping and then heard this buzzing sounds and smelled like something was burning.
Got it removed 5 hours ago and the area where the mole was looks red and slightly indented. I know I will have some degree of a scar, which I am fine with that, but will the skin look indented like it is now or will it minimize once it starts to scab and once the scab fall off. I know is too soon to be worrying about the end result but honestly, I don't like how is looking right now. It looks like someone carved in my nose. I am scheduled to see him in 6 weeks and he said he will do some touch up then. What he meant by touch ups, I don't know.

Hi,

The shaving method is the most commonly used technique for protruding mole removal. At the end of each session, an electrical instrument is used to cauterize or burn the area to stop the bleeding.  The area should be cleaned twice a day and antibiotic ointment should be used to prevent infection. A scab might develop but it should heal within a week or two. A very common after-effect of surgical mole removal is scarring. These scars can range from just a line, to an oval shape depending on the type of method used and the amount of skin and tissue removed. Scars will fade over time but for quicker results skin resurfacing or other scar procedures can be done, which what your doctor might be talking about in 6 weeks time. Take care and keep us posted.
