Growing red spot on penis

by BakaGaijin, May 04, 2007 12:00AM
Starting about six months ago I have been seeing this red growth on my penis.  It not not itch or hurt in any way.  Sometimes it has "scales" and parts of it come off - other times it "sheds" skin and starts to grow - sort of like ringworm.  Today it became very sensitive as a lot of the skin came off and a small area was nearly raw but no draining and no real liquid.  I had tried putting some OTC cream on it - maybe that made the problem worse?

here's a link to a photo:

As for history, 40 year old married male, no extramarital sex in the last few years.  Wife has no "symptoms" or complaints.  We are refraining from sex until we figure this out.  Should I see a GP right away?  Could this be some soft of STD?  I am thinking maybe some sort of "jock itch" or something??  Any suggestions on what I could try before going to the GP?

I am overweight and I do sometimes get ingrown hairs and they sometimes turn into boils on my legs in the groin area.  Could my groin area be hosting something causing this?  Most concern for my wife is if it can be transmitted sexually..  Most concern for me is my red-nosed-reindeer look...  Thanks for any suggestions.  Kind Regards.

It looks like lichen planus.  This is a relatively uncommon but entirely unserious skin disease of unknown cause.  When it affects the penis, this is what it looks like.  It can be treated with medicated creams and it is not sexually related in any way.  I suggest you look into diagnosis and treatment as soon as you can, so you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Best.

Thank you Dr.  I appreciate your information.  What is the typical lifecycle of this condition?  It is normal as I explained to shed skin, kind of remain dormant for a while and then come back?  Is it fungal?  I'm just curious.  I will make an appointment to see someone and get this taken care of.

Regards,

Tim

Hi - the Dr. doesn't usually respond to a second question. You may try posting a question on the unmoderated part of this forum (left hand part of the forum, click on Medical Communities, then Gastroenterology.)  Some very articulate and experienced patients usually respod with great insight.
Take care, Liz.
