Hair Loss

by Ellie5401, Jul 24, 2008 07:46PM
I have lost 50 pounds since December, just had blood work checked by a DERM and all was normal, thyroid, testosterone, blood count, DHEA...
I have extreme hair loss where I lose tons of hair in the shower, when I comb, when I brush after dry, on my pillow, all over my floor, they are always falling on my arms...I am going crazy. I am a very anxious person with occasionally panic attacks. This issue with my hair is taking me over the edge. The hair that is left is fine and broken off...don't understand what is going on. I've always had great abundant thick hair but have always done highlights also. I am no longer doing highlights just touching up my roots. Will I go completely bald?? I can tell that my hair is thinning everywhere. Thanks for your patience.

Hi,
Hair loss, also known as baldness refers to excessive hair loss from scalp and can be the result of heredity, certain medications or an underlying medical condition.
It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of a cycle of growing new hairs and loosing some. However, some people may experience excessive hair loss which might cause baldness.

Baldness involves the state of lacking hair where it often grows, especially on the head. The most common form of baldness is a progressive hair thinning condition called androgenic alopecia or 'male pattern baldness'.

Alopecia areata, is a condition  which involves the loss of some of the hair from the head, which can be genetic or due to some underlying medical conditions like thyroid disorders and iron deficiency anaemia.

Since you have been worked up and the test results are normal,  the hair loss that you are experiencing could be due to over-treatment of the hair or a genetic predisposition.

Treatments for the various forms alopecia have limited success. Some hair loss sufferers make use of so-called "clinically proven treatments" such as finasteride and topically applied minoxidil (in solution) in an attempt to prevent further loss and regrow hair.

As a general rule, it is easier to maintain remaining hair than it is to regrow; however, the treatments mentioned will help some of the users suffering from Androgenetic alopecia. The effectiveness of finasteride and minoxidil is not universally accepted.
