Hair loss due to straightner?

Hi doc. I'm a 29 year old caucasian male with some hairloss precedents on my father side of the family. I had my hair strightened a few times 2 years ago. I suddently realised that I was loosing hair and saw a dermathologist(occasionaly had some itching). He thought hair loss was stress related and prescribed, Regain, Crimanex Shampoo, and Propecia for about a year. Although I took all these medicaments the hair loss was not completely recovered. For 6 months I didn't take anything anymore and hair loss started again. Went to another dermatologist and she said that there is no point in taking propecia and regain at the same time. She put me on propecia again and crimanex shampoo and squamed shampoo. At present I have occasional itching and I can see that my hair is thin and i have a slight patch running laterally across the top front part of my head. Would like to know whether it can be considered scarring alopecia and if its the case will it ever grow back or do I have to continue taking propecia forever? Understand that propecia contains hormones and it affects my sex drive. What do you think?

Hard for me to answer.  Hair loss from straightening can sometimes be permanent (and it may in fact be genetic, which of course if permanent as well as progessive).  Propecia is worth a try, but if it hasn't worked in this time. then it probably won't help if you continue it.  Propecia does a better job of holding onto hair than of growing hair.  As to affecting your sex drive, that's uncommon, but if it's having that effect, it's another reason to stop the drug.

You may have little option other than to either live with the condition or consider a procedure like hair transplantation.  You should talk this over with your skin doctor.
