Hair thinning at sides due to scratching - traction alopecia?

by JV2009, Mar 18, 2009 04:53PM
Hello and thank you for time and attention.

I am a 22 year old male with fairly serious OCD issues, and about 6-8 months ago I started a habit of scratching my head and couldn't stop.  I seem to have managed to stop now, but my hair is noticeably thinner on the sides (where my temples are).  Also I have a small bald spot in the back, in an area I scratched a lot in particular.  My hairline is receding a bit in the front, but I have such thick hair that it's not really an issue, at least with how it looks now.

Is it likely that the hair will grow back in the places it previously thinned?  What should I do to maximize my chances?  Should I use rogaine?  Should I shave my head?  Should I see a doctor?  Should I take vitamins?  I read on a few sites that "chronic" traction alopecia, which it is considered to be after 3 years, is often irreversible.  Is my hair more likely to grow back since it hasn't been nearly that long?

Thanks again.
