Hand Peeling

by jr2105, Oct 28, 2008 01:02AM
I have had a problem with my hands peeling. I've had this for years and my father has had the same thing. It seems like they get worse when I leave them in water too long and they form what looks like blisters but it doesnt hurt. Also, I've noticed that it comes and goes. Most of the time its when seasons change. For example, in the winter time and the summer. Not sure why but it does. I think is a fungus. If my hands get too dry my finger tips will split open and the peeling starts to hurt. Ive tried lotions and they dont seem to help much. I even went to a doctor when I was younger and he prescribed some hand cream that didnt help either. I also get that rash on them that burns and itches but that never lasts long. Not sure if that will help. Can you tell me what it is or could be? Palms and finger tips peel and hands in water for long periods of time make it worse.

Hi,

This could be  exfoliative keratolysis which is a common skin condition in which there is focal peeling of the palms and sometimes the soles. It is more common during the summer months, and most often affects young adults. It presents with one or more superficial air-filled blisters on the fingers or palms that burst to leave peeled areas which may become red, dry and cracked. The symptoms are aggravated by exposure to irritants including water, soap, detergents and solvents. This condition usually recurs within a few weeks. It is best to determine the irritants and avoid exposure.  Emollient hand creams especially those containing urea, lactic acid, or silicone may also help. If it persists, it would be best to have this evaluated further by a specialist.

Take care and regards.
