Hello,
One of the causes for hard skin in infants is ichthyosis. In sufferers of the disease, the skin contains massive, diamond-shaped scales, and tends to have a reddish color. Diagnosis is done by genetic testing and biopsy skin. Genetic testing is the most specific diagnostic test for harlequin ichthyosis. This test reveals a mutation on the ABCA12 gene. Biopsy of skin may be done to assess the histologic characteristics of the cells.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
