Help! Pregnant with Chronic Urticaria

by hkgrl7, Nov 06, 2007 05:10AM
Hi! I have had chronic urticaria for approx. 2-3 years and have always taken different antihistamines (Zyrtec, Claratine, Allegra).  I have found out that I am 6 weeks pregnant and have been advise to stop taking these meds (I'm currently living in Australia). I have been told that I can take Polaramine but should only take it when really necessary "when the benefits outweigh the risks".  Obviously, this is not a life threatening condition but it is EXTREMELY uncomfortable.  The package of Polaramine says it can be taken every six hours and I have been trying to only take it once at night.  I saw my Dr. yesterday and she said that it was really "unfortunate" that I have urticaria but I should really try and stop taking the Polaramine every night and I am unable to use cortisone creams until the 2nd trimester. Anyway, to make a long story short, I have been lathering aquaeous cream on my body every half hour to try and stop the hives but I am going CRAZY!  I figure I can't be the first person to have urticaria during pregnancy..what can I do???

You can use creams containing menthol or pramoxine (ask your pharmacist), and you can take the antihistamines your obstetrician approves.  I'm afraid there's not much else I can say.  Sorry.
