Hello- I am desperately seeking help with my hair loss. I've been to a dermatologist and GP but none offer explanations, and give very vague information. They just give a laundry list of possible causes with no treatment plan to narrow it down.
My hair started falling out in September. I noticed diffuse thinning with more loss at temples and bangs, and scalp was very very sore and red. I do not have dandruff
, but I don't really see any. My GP and Gyn. did blood tests and also had nothing to offer. I take Levothyroxin (levothyroxine), Lamotrigine, and Protonix. They could not conclusively tell me if any of those could cause hair loss in the pattern I'm experiencing.
Now, 3 months later, hair continues to fall out in phases. My scalp redness is gone, except in little intermittent patches
of redness. It will slow, then all of a sudden it gets worse. This may sound very strange, but sometimes I feel this little pricks, like someone is poking my scalp with a needle, When I run my fingers
through the area where I feel those pricks, a hair comes out every single time. Sometimes groups of 5 or 6 hairs come out. I can't believe I would be able to feel the hair coming out, but it's surefire that every time I feel those prickles, hair loss follows. Today, I'm getting wads of it. Merry Christmas to me.
I'm frustrated with the lack of answers. People say to find someone who specializes in hair loss, but there is no one in my area. I live in the largest city in my state. I would have to fly somewhere to find someone, and that's a huge expense and a risk because it may lead
I would hugely appreciate either of these: Refer me to a doctor who is known to really, truly care and have the expertise to diagnose and is not trying to sell hair loss potions or hair restoration priducts; OR some ideas about what causes hair loss at temples and front of head, with inflammation and prickling, I do NOT have any pattern baldness in my family and in fact descend from people with incredible thickness and volume of hair, well into their 90s, so far! I have one great-uncle who had MPB in his 50s. Appreciate any help. Thanks a million!
Hello,
For such kind of hair loss, male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia needs to be ruled out. Androgenic alopecia is a common form of hair loss and typically occurs in M shaped pattern.
Men who have this type of hair loss usually have inherited the trait. Other causes may be use of some drugs, infections and underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. A biopsy (taking a small sample of cells to examine under a microscope) of your scalp may be needed to establish the correct diagnosis.
Medicines which are useful are minoxidil and finasteride. Finally one can resort to hair transplantation also. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your dermatologist. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
