I AM ITCHY AND GOING INSANE

Hello,

I am always itchy, all over my body. I know from other posts that dry skin causes itchiness, but I know I don’t have dry skin. Its isn’t like a rash, but when I itch, my skin becomes raised. After I itch I can see the path of my fingernails, they seem to "swell." On my arms, however, I get little raised bumps after I itch. Anti-itch cream doesn’t work because the same area never stays itchy for too long and I can’t predict which area of my body will become itchy next.  Even my scalp is itchy at times, not because of dandruff or dry skin, even after I have showered and washed my hair several times and scrubbed my body until there could be no possible dirt left.  I don’t believe that it could be allergies because I will experience itchiness for a length of time, maybe 2-3 weeks, then (without my noticing) I won’t be itchy for a time; but the itchiness always returns. IT doesn’t seem as if it is an allergic reaction because my routine doesn’t change, I’m not being exposed to new stimuli.  I fear eczema, but that doesn’t seem to fit either.  I don’t experience after affects of the itchiness (I don’t have scaly patches of skin or lasting rash/swollenness/hives).  Taking Benadryl does not help to relieve my itching either. At times it is difficult for me to sleep due to my itching, while at other times I scarcely notice. Please help me, I may go insane from this persistent itch.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
It can be hives or eczma. The other possibilities are internal diseases like liver and kidney disorders, diabetes, iron deficiency anemia, irritation and allergic reactions to chemicals, wool, soaps, cosmetics and certain foods  can cause itchy skin. You can apply an anti-itch cream or lotion to the affected area. Oral antihistamine, such as Benadryl can also be used. You should take a comfortably cool bath and wear smooth-textured cotton clothing. You should choose mild soaps without dyes or perfumes and use a mild, unscented laundry detergent when washing clothes, towels and bedding. Please take a second opinion from a dermatologist if the symptoms persist. He/She will start with the specific medications. If an internal disease is found, whether it's kidney disease, iron deficiency or a thyroid problem, treating that disease often relieves the itch. Lastly, Phototherapy can also be tried.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your dermatologist. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
