Sun exposure, following the use of deodorant soaps, scented toiletries, and various cosmetics can also produce a mottled pigmentation. This is called a phototoxic reaction and is due to ultraviolet radiation being absorbed by the chemical substance .
In females usage of oral contraceptives can cause it.
Hormonal imbalance seen in some conditions can cause it.
Vitiligo or leukoderma is a chronic skin condition that causes loss of pigment, resulting in irregular pale patches of skin.It can cause purple or golden brown patches on mucous membranes and around the eyes, nostrils, and mouth.
Vitiligo is associated with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, commonly thyroid overexpression and underexpression.
The traditional treatment given by most dermatologists is corticosteroid cream.
Phototherapy may also be beneficial.
