I am 35 weeks pregnant and may have been using harmful products..HELP!!!

by Sfischbein, Jul 03, 2003 12:00AM
I am 35 weeks pregnant and have been using a face wash that contains 2% Salicylic Acid.  I also used Bengay on a sore muscle in my leg last night and I just found out that these products may cause birth defects!  I am extremely worried about this and not sure what to do...please help!

On another note I had a stent put in about 3 weeks ago because of kidney stones.  The stent has caused severe pain and an infection in my bladder so my Doctor's prescribed me Vicodin for the pain and Macrobid for the infection.  I am also worried about taking these medications during pregnancy!

PLEASE HELP!!!

Please don't worry about either.  It's true that salicylic acid is not recommended during pregnancy.  However, the 2% concentration you can buy over-the-counter is so mild that there shouldn't be any problem.  That's why you don't need a prescription for it.

As for the Vicodin and Macrobid, I suggest you speak to the doctor who prescribed these and to your obstetrician.  Drugs like these provice a benefit which, especially in the late stages of pregnancy that you're in, will I am confident clearly outweigh any risk.  I'm sure you'll discover your doctors took this into direct account when they recommend them.

Best.  (And good luck!)

We use Macrobid(Macrodantin) and Vicodin in Pregnancy when needed.  The baby is already formed by this time so you can relieve your mind about birth defects form the medicine.  Discuss it with your Medical Provider so you can relax.  Being worried has more ill effects on your body than these meds.  You did the right thing taking the medicine prescribed.
