If not warts, then what?

by derick, Apr 25, 2003 12:00AM
About 2 1/2 years ago I developed a small flesh colored bump on the top of the shaft of my penis.  It is less than a quarter of an inch below where I was circumcised.  It does not itch, hurt nor burn.  I went to see my local doctor about it and he said that it did not look like a wart but froze it off anyway.  In less than about two weeks it started to come back and he burned it off again.  It started to come back for a third time and I opted for a second opinion.  I went to the local STD clinic figuring they may have seen more of these types of things than my local doctor and got back the opinion that it was not a wart but the start of a skin tag and that it was nothing that I should worry about.
I recently had my yearly physical and showed it to my new doctor and he admited that he did not know what it was but it did not look like anything serious.  He too could not tell me what is was but what he thought it was not.  He said that if I felt I needed a second opinion, I should see a dermatologist to fidn out for sure.  I consulted a dermatologist and he too said that it did not look like a wart but more like the start of a skin tag but he did not seem to confident in his answer.  He did not offer to freeze it off, he decided to just leave it alone.
I have been reading your message board for a while a while and decided to see what  you think based on the facts:

  1.  The "bump" is about 2 1/2 years old and has not grown any bigger than the head of a stick pen.
  2.  The bump is flesh colored and seems to be under the skin and not on it.  If I squeeze it, nothing comes out.  The bump, as well as the area around it is smooth.
  3.  The bump does not itch or burn.  If I come out of a hot shower or bath sometimes the bump turns white but then goes back to flesh color after I dry off.
  4.  The bump is somewhat round in shape and not that raised.  There are no "broken lines" around the bump.
  5.  I have done the vinegar test and nothing turns white, is there a thing as a false negative?

I recently noticed a second one appearing after 2 1/2 years of the first one and following the same pattern, that started my concern up again.  In reading your forum I am more apt to think that these are cyst more than warts.  I have looked at them under a magnifying glass and not noticed any of the wart like symptoms decscribed but I have also not found any pictures on the web coming close to what I have.  I am just trying to find out what these are instead of hearing what people think they are not.
I realize that it is hard to know what they are without seeing them but hopefully the facts will at least put things in the ballpark for a pretty good guess.

Thanks....

I think it's a cyst and I think you should forget about it.  You've certainly gotten enough experienced opinions to the effect that it isn't a problem.  Best to ignore what's just sitting there.  The color changes you describe aren't important--they're just optical effects from water, heat, etc.

Best.

A few days ago I took a look at the tags/cyst and noticed a soft white piece of skin on the tip on them.  It came off with just a gentle stroke of  my finger but I am not sure why it is there.  It was small in size and on the top of the center of one of the tags/cyst.  Does that make any differnce in what it may be.  Sorry to sound overly concerned but just wondering if that was "normal".
