Im covered in white spots

Dear Dr.,

My name is Angela and for about a month now I have started getting white spots over my body. First it started a little on my arms then my chest and stomatch. Now the spots are on my back, butt, upper and lower legs, arms, hands, neck, face, stomach, and chest. There are more on my arms, neck chest and upper legs than any where esle. They don't itch but sometimes have a reddish scaly texture and then the skin peels off leaving a white spot. Most of the spots are different sizes and mainly a circluar shape. I would have gone to a doctor but I don't have the finances and they didn't really seem like a life or death situation. I have tried tanning to see if it would cover up the spots but the rest of my skin got darker except for the spots. So now they are even more noticeable. I'm starting to look like a dalmation! Help! ( my skin is normally a light brown color, I am Hispanic and Caucasion)

Hi

Looking at the image, this appears to be tinea versicolor which is a fungal infection. This may need topical antifungal medications applied thinly over affected areas. Also, avoid sharing any towels and other personal belongings. Tinea is contagious and may be readily spread through direct skin to skin contact.

Are these patches itchy?

No the spots aren't itchy and when they started to show up in thicker and more numerous patches the first thing I did was check my 2 yr old daughter for the spots. She didnt have them 3wks ago and still does not have them. I thought first it was some sort of fungus at first and was told by a few friends to try washing with selson blue or something similar so I did but nothing worked.

Hi there i too have these spots. Sorry i cant tell u what it is as my doc believes it fungal too but as you said no one else in you family has it, i have had it for over 10 years it comes and goes seems to be seasonal.. i  tried Nizoral, selsun blue and a few other creams and lotions with no luck then the doc gave me Nizoral in tablet form and that cleared it up for about 3 months but now it slow making a come back. I just want to know what it is, next visit to the doc i think i might have to push to get him to send me to a dermatologist..
