. Hyperkeratinization and formation of a plug of keratin and sebum (a microcomedo) is the earliest change. The microcomedo may enlarge to form an open comedo (blackhead) or closed comedo (whitehead). For the first few weeks after stopping use of the Duac gel, you will probably experience a moderate breakout. However, this should not discourage you.
The Duac treatment is a combination of clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide; these chemicals work to manage the bacteria on your skin, killing it and allowing for a healthier, cleaner complexion. Any anti-bacterial medicine becomes ineffective after a while, as bacteria evolves and then resists the compounds originally intended to relinquish it. That said, when you abruptly discontinue use of an acne medication, your skin will be rather vulnerable, and will likely flare up—but once it then heals, which will of course take longer than it would were you using the gel, the previously effected areas should be clearer, smoother, and healthier.
Basically, it will initially get worse, but it should soon improve significantly.
