This is a condition called folliculitis. Folliculitis is a superficial infection of the hair follicles characterized by red papules and pustules, usually located around a hair follicle.
Folliculitis is generally asymptomatic, but may be itchy or even painful. It starts when hair follicles are damaged get damaged by shaving or wearing tight clothes.
The damaged follicles are then infected with the bacteria Staphylococcus (staph).
They gain entry through minor nicks and cuts on the surface of the skin.
Treatment is application of an antibiotic ointment such as mupirocin or neomycin. The marks that are left behind are called post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation, which occurs due to trauma caused to the melanocytes in the area.
It will fade with time.
They are known to recur, partly due to genetic predisposition and also due to external factors. Iron deficiency anemia is sometimes associated with chronic cases.
