Irregular Hairloss?

by Jim76, Jul 05, 2005 12:00AM
I am a 29 year old man.  In the past year, i have noticed several areas of irregular hair loss on the sides and back of my head.  I first noticed small "lines" of hair loss above my ears and above my side burns.  These have come and gone for the most part.  I keep the back and sides of my head shaved very close, and have noticed some longer lasting irregular shaped thin/bald spots on the sides of my head.  These spots are surrounded by normal growth so they stand out.  Some are small, about the size and shape of a small pea.  Others are larger with no regular shape at all.  The bigger ones are still pretty narrow, but stretch further in different directions.  Some are several inches long. (kind of looks like a road map). The hair loss is very spotty.  I've noticed none of this on the top of my head, but that hair is longer, so it would be hard to tell.  During this time period, I've also had problems with dandruff, which has NEVER been a problem before. Could it be stress or health related, or could it be normal hair loss?  For the most part, I feel like i'm in good health, but have dealt with some prolonged, ongoing  depression issues over the past year.  Should I see a doctor about it? I can accept it if nothing can be done, but if its treatable, I would like to do something about it.

Normal male hair loss proceeds from the front, so yes, you should see a doctor about this.  Dandruff, by the way, never causes hair loss, even in severe cases, unless people scratch away the hairs, and even the the loss is just temporary.  Your description doesn't match any of the typical kinds of hair loss I see.  Perhaps a skin doctor can tell more in person.

Take care.
