Is it a wart?

by mmiller2577, Feb 28, 2006 12:00AM
Hey Doc,
Im a little freaked out right now.  About a week ago I found a tiny flesh colored postule (nodule?) on the underside of my penis just below the head.  Its very small <1mm.  Its nearly invisible until I stretch the skin and then you can see it is slightly raised.  It isnt particularly sensitive i.e. it doesnt hurt or itch.  I only found it after a couple of bouts of rather intense masturbation in which my penis became a little chaffed.  It hasnt changed at all since I discovered it. Ive never noticed it or anything like it before.
I went to my GP and she emphatically said it wasnt herpes but that she wasnt sure if it was the begining of a wart.  She said it was so insignificant that she wasnt worried.  She said if it changed or grew to come back.  Well it hasnt but Im still freaked out.  Ive been married for 3 years now, but Ive dated this woman for approx 8 years.  While we were dating I had brief genital contact with 2 other women ( 6 years ago and 8 years). My only other sexual contact has been oral with condom from 2 other women.  My wife and I just had a child a couple of months ago hence the masturbation and her OB said she was clear.  However Ive been self diagnosing on the internet and been getting progressively more worried.  My questions:

1) If it is a genital wart, could it really lie dormant for 6 to 8 years?  And if it is a wart how long before it would grow into something that would lead to positive diagnosis.

2) Does this sound like genital warts?  Could it be something else?
Scared to death.  I apologize for the length of this post.  Thanks for your time and advice Doc.

Many men have small bumps on the underside of the head of the penis.  These are not warts.  Most warts occur further down the shaft.

Yes, it is possible for warts to lie dormant for years.  However, what you have does not sound like a wart.  Also, you've been with your wife for years, and if she does for regular Gyn care--and she obviously does--then the doctor would have noticed if she had warts, and she obviously doesn't.

If the bump comes back, show it to a dermatologist, just for reassurance.

Congratulations on your new child!

PS
I know you will probably not approve but I did attempt a self diagnosis via the white vinegar, several times.  There was no change to the vesicle(postule, papule, nodule?).  All it did was irritate my genitals.  Thanks again.
