Is the Herpes Virus Air Borne? ...In Droplets of Saliva?

by SJJJ, Jun 04, 2008 12:51AM

A student of mine has the tendency of standing too close while speaking. The problem is she get about 2 or 3 Herpes/ Cold sores around her mouth. A droplet of her spit landed on my bottom lip while she was speaking to me, and there were sores present~ I rubbed some alcohol on it about 3 minutes later (I'm sure to late)~ but I'm paranoid now... I will see my doctor in aprox 2 weeks.... It feels as if the area is itching/tingling but I'm not sure if it's from my paranoia ...

It's been drilled so often not to share cups, lip sticks/balms etc... SO WHAT'S THE CHANCES OF CATCHING HERPES LIKE THIS??

Has anyone contacted the Virus this way?

It wouldn't be such a big deal but I don't want to spread this to my husband or child ...

Hi

I understand your concern. It is important to note however that not all persons with exposure or contact to the virus will be infected or manifest disease ."Herpes is spread by direct skin to skin contact. Unlike a flu virus that you can get through the air, herpes spreads by direct contact, that is, directly from the site of infection to the site of contact." (http://www.herpes.com/Transmission.shtml) .As in your case, it requires frequent and prolonged contact, a deficient immune response and high viral load for the disease to progress and manifest .Otherwise, our immune system will be able to maintain it. I do not think you should be very worried about this. I suggest that you pursue you doctor's consult for a complete examination to allay your fears. Eat well and drink plenty of water. Also get adequate amount of sleep to boost the immune system.
