Is this a melanoma

Dr. about 5 years I had a melanoma in situ removed and have been faithfully seeing a derm. ever since. I often have moles removed and they have always been ok. This time however, the pathology came back moderately to severe compound dysplastic nevus and I have a reexcision scheduled. Is this cancer or is it still a benign condition? Pathology would have indicated it as a melanoma on the report if it was , right? I asked the nurse about it and she told me it was benign, but I just need to be sure and peace of mind would be nice.

Yes, the report would have been read as melanoma if that's what it was.  The re-excision for precautionary purposes should confirm that it was just an atypical mole, not a melanoma.
