Just How Safe Is It To Take Hyaluronic Acid Orally For Cosmetic Purposes?

Hello,
I got some good results taking HA 200 mg/day after a couple weeks.  Noticed softer, more radiant, little less wrinkled, little more "youthful" skin on my face.  I got this dosage recommendation after reading several posts here, on deja.com, etc. from persons taking this amount daily for cosmetic purposes--and not necessarily with a doctor's supervision.
A well-meaning but a little hard-to-access MD sent me a message saying it's not necessarily safe to take HA without physician supervision as it can cause side effects such as GI trouble, joint swelling and effusion, etc.
I was just wondering how safe it is to take 200 mg (or more) of HA daily for non-orthopedic reasons, i.e., skin enhancement and beautification reasons.  Just how accurate was this doctor's message to me?  Does anyone have any input on this difficult-to-research topic?
THANKS
