Dear Doctor,
I'm 22 and I have Keloids all over my back and chest. I don't know what I ate or did, but they just seemed to form over night. A doctor removed one for testing and told me that though the keloids are benigned, he doesn't know exactly how to treat them. Even worse, another keloid grew in place of the removed one and is much harder and larger. As a result of the surgery, I've lost sensation in the area around the new growth. I was called back to try steroid shots and more surgical removals, and I said, "No thanks!"
What should I do? Do the silicon patchesAllergy testing Skin color - patchy work? Can you refer me to anyone?
Avoid further surgeries or any form of injuries to the skin. The therapies mentioned above may be a bit expensive. If the keloids are located in visible areas, then this may be something you want to address due to aesthetic or cosmetic reasons.
Cortisone injections appear to be relatively safe. Laser therapy has also been used to improve the appearance of keloids. Lately, some medications like interferon has been investigated to help keloid formers. Silicone gel sheeting has also been used by clinicians and surgeons in managing deep and thick scars. The results appear to be promising. (See this url : http://www.medicinenet.com/keloid/page3.htm)
