Maddening Skin Itch, what is it?

For years now I've lived with a condition that seems to have no solution.  My groin (particularly my scrotum and folds) has a incessant itch that I can only control with a great deal of effort.  If I use a product with lidocaine or some other topical numbing agent that works temporarily but does not solve the problem.

I've been to a dozen dermatologists who have treated it as general psoriasis, but that seems to be a catch all when they don't know what the problem is.

There is no weeping or crusting associated with the itch.  I'm certain that it's worse with stress, but I don't think stress is the cause.

One thing I've noticed recently is that a diphenhydramine hydrochloride spray (2%, benedryl spray) works well to stop the itch.  Does this tell me that it's some sort of allergic reaction to something?  (I've switched detergents to every kind of skin sensative brand I can think of with no changes.)  Would benedryl spray work even if it was something else?

Any other solutions would be fantastic...  My goal would be to live without having to medicate several times a day.  Any solution would be good.

I have a similar issue, and found that it is some sort of fungal infection caused by sweat. I currently use Selsun Blue Medicated shampoo which after a few days works to definitely slow the progression, but you must use it as a lotion twice a day after showering, and continue until you feel no more discomfort. If the problem re-occurs, try clotrimazole for athletes foot which also works in the same manner.
