Metronidizale Gel Allergy

Hi Doctor:

I have had recurrent BV and was prescribed Metronidizale Gel for it. I used it and unfortunately had intercourse the next day. A few hours later my boyfriend complained of having a burning penile rash, which I assumed was from an allergy to the Metronidizale. He went to the hospital and got a cream for it. Now, several days later, he says its "better" but still complains of being raw. He also did bizarre stuff like apply alcohol to his penis.

Have you heard of such an allergic reaction. What can we do now?

Thanks

Hi:

Thanks so much for your advice. I don't know exactly which cream he is using, but at this point I suggested that he sees a dermatologist. I believe his penile rash is hives, which is one of the listed, although uncommon, allergic side effects to the Metro Gel. It's been 6 days and no Improvement. I hope he goes to seek more medical advice, I can't imagine the kind of pain and discomfort I've subjected him to.  Oddly enough the Metro Gel worked on me with no side effects...I feel fine.

Thanks again,

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Even products like alcohol should be used with caution on the delicate skin of penis. Do not use any cosmetic products at the sites. He can apply some calamine lotion at the rash as it will help in soothing the skin. Also wear cotton undergarments. Application of mild corticosteroid cream and oral antiinflammatories like ibuprofen/acetaminophen are also helpful. If the symptoms are severe then it will be best to consult a dermatologist.

I hope it helps. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
