Mildly autistic with small cavernous hemangioma on ear

by Ballinamore, Jul 02, 2009 07:50AM
This is going to be an odd question.  My son was born 41.5 weeks with a small cavernouse hemangioma on the outer part of his ear. It is purple and the size of a lima bean.  He started missing speech and language milestones at the age of 9 months and at 18 months was dx'd developmentally delayed.  At 33 months a team of "developmental diagnosers" (for lack of a better description) decided he was autistic.  I have had several child professionals and teachers disagree with that dx, and yet we waffle back and forth wondering if he truly is.  He has speech delays of auditory processing skills.  He has trouble receiving and expressing information and thoughts, although it is clear to everyone that he truly understands, given the time and sometimes visual clues.  His hearing and vision is fine.  He has no sensory issues.  He loves and gives affection freely.   He thrives in the mainstream classroom, and enjoys his classmates.

Here is my question about the hemangioma.  It has not increased or decreased in size since birth.  I worry so much that the part we see is just part of it. It does seem to have a vein running from it to his head right under his ear.   Is there a possibility that there can be more inside the brain?  The ear affected is the left ear.  I have always wondered if this is contributing to his auditory processing problems.   I am aware that it is likely nothing, but if I don't ask, I will never know.

Thanks!!
