Mole Removal - Scarring

Mole Removal - Scarring

My 6 year old has had a freckle/mole on the top of her shoulder since birth. Over the last two years, the 'freckle' has grown in size, become more irregular in shape and color (lighter brown and jagged on the edges and dark and raised in the middle).  Our dermatologist recommended removal and referred us to a plastic surgeon.  The plastic surgeon also thought it should be removed.  He explained it would be a 'football' shaped cut so that it would sew up in a straight line.  I reluctantly went ahead with the removal (pathology was normal).  It's been several months now and her scar is much bigger and wider than I expected.  The freckle/mole itself was 4mm.  Her scar is about 1" long and 1/4" wide and quite pink (it's flat and smooth).  I feel like I scarred her little body for no reason.  I rub Mederma several times a day.  Is this normal?  Will is disappear over time?  Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hello,
The scar that you are describing is a post inflammatory scar and it should diminish with time as your child grows up. Also we cannot prescribe any creams like hydroquinone or treatments like dermabrasion and laser treatment at such a young age. After 17-1 8 years of age, these treatment options can be prescribed.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your dermatologist. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
