Mole on back

by oliverm82, Jul 26, 2006 12:00AM
I am 57 years old, and I have just noticed a mole on my back.  It is something between oval and circular, about 5mm in diameter, red with a pin-sized black spot and a little brown section next to it in the middle, and unlike my other moles it is raised. It does not have any jagged borders and it is neither irritating nor painful.  I have only noticed it within the last week.  Do you believe this is anything to be alarmed about?
+ What are the features that I should look out for?

No, it sounds normal enough.

To look for what melanoma looks like, please check this page from the American Academy of Dermatology:

http://www.aad.org/public/Publications/pamphlets/MalignantMelanoma.htm

But don't try to diagnose yourself--show anything questionable to a doctor.

Take care.
