Mollescum wont go away after 5 years

by holdplease, Jun 06, 2008 12:08PM
I contracted what was diagnosed as Mollescum Contagiosum over five years ago and the sores continue to appear on my body no matter what I have tried to get rid of them. It began with one small sore on my penis after unprotected sex - eventually it moved to my forearms, the center of my chest, back, and on occasion will move to my parts of my face. Sometimes the spots will disappear and seem to clear up, but only for a matter of days before more pop up. The sores have never reappeared on my genital area. I am in my mid thirties. I have tried an expensive online treatment call Silver Cure that did not stop the sores from reappearing constantly. I am healthy and feel I eat a healthy diet and I have good Hygiene habits. I bathe at least once a day. I wash my sheets and clothing often and I have tried covering the sores with nail polish remover and burning them off using canned air upside down (to freeze them). I dont have the money to throw at expensive treatments when they just keep coming back. How do I get rid of the Mollescum? They don't cover me by any means, but the few sores that show up are noticeable and annoying~ I don't pop them as I know that might spread it. Could I have a skin type that breeds this contagion?  Any advice is helpful. Thank you! - distressed  & discouraged

Hi,

You should talk to your skin specialist about the surgical options available and laser therapy in your case.

'Individual molluscum lesions may go away on their own and are reported as lasting generally from 6 to 8 weeks, to 2 or 3 months. However via autoinoculation, the disease may propagate and so an outbreak generally lasts longer with mean durations variously reported as 8 months, to about 18 months, and with a range of durations from 6 months to 5 years.

In adults, molluscum infections are often sexually transmitted and usually affect the genitals, lower abdomen, buttocks, and inner thighs. In rare cases, molluscum infections are also found on the lips, mouth, and eyelids.'

You could read more about the condition at the following links -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molluscum_contagiosum

and

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/molluscum-contagiosum/DS00672

'Surgical treatments include cryosurgery, in which liquid nitrogen is used to freeze and destroy lesions, as well as scraping them off with a curette.

Pulsed dye laser therapy for molluscum contagiosum may be the treatment of choice for multiple lesions in a cooperative patient .'

Let us know if you need any other information and post us about how you are doing.

Regards.
