Onychomycosis or nail fungal infections usually develop on nails continually exposed to warm, moist environments. It may begin as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail and leads to discoloration, thickening and crumbling edges. Infected nails may also separate from the nail bed and presents as a dark color, caused by debris building up under the nail. Diagnosis is usually microscopical analysis of the scraped debris from under the nail. An infection with nail fungus may be difficult to treat, and infections may recur. Over-the-counter antifungal nail creams and ointments are available, but they are not very effective. If the nail infection is severe or extremely painful, your doctor may suggest removing your nail. Take care and keep us posted.
