Ongoing: Random Hives

Hello!

For the past month I have had random hives appear all over my body. And I mean random, I go days without having one single hive and then all of a sudden patches of hives appear!

Please keep in mind, I do not have any food allergies and have not changed any detergent, soaps, perfumes etc.

The only place I seem to break out is when I am in bed doing absolutely nothing. For instance, last night I was watching TV and began to itch, I pulled my shirt back and noticed a hive the size of a quarter. I recently washed my sheets with fragrance free detergent and dryer sheets.

My hives usually appear along my waistline, behind my neck and groin area. They can be the size of a water droplet to (the size of) 2 quarters put together.

I am getting frustrated because I cannot figure out what's causing my random breakouts. My only solution is to pop a benedryll, but I don't want to do that every time. However, if I don't take a benedryll my hives spread (not rapidly) & do not seem to go away quickly. So far, I have not had trouble breathing.

Like I said, I do not have any food allergies (or changed my diet) & although I am sensitive to fragrances, I've always used fragrance/dye free soaps.

WHAT'S CAUSING MY RANDOM HIVES? Any ideas are welcome.

I use to break out in hives everyday. It started about 2 years ago out of no where and it would happen everyday all day really. I had to ho to the emergency room once because i woke up one morning and my face looked like someone had beaten me up through the night. The doctors put me on benadryl and told me I had developed an allergic reaction to something (possibly something I was eating) but I had no idea what. They said it happens to people often, i would just have to have an allergy test done. The hives presisted over the course of a few more weeks, then i was approached by a friend at a park i would walk at. She was doing a juice fast to lose weight and had lost about 13 pounds over the course of 2 weeks. I also wanted to lose weight so i decided to do it with her for another 2 weeks. During that time i only drank juice and water. Everytime i was hungry i drunk a juice. I purchased many Naked juices in different flavors from the grocery store and went at it. Im so happy to say that after that fast I not only lost some weight, but I also stopped breaking out in hives. I went back to normal eating and unfortunately gained back the weight but the hives have never returned. I didn't expect that but it worked for me. You should certainly try it. Im posting this on here because i remember the times I spent searching the internet for an answer as well. It was comforting to know I was not alone, but also very frustrating that no one had gound a reason or a resolution. I hope this helps you and other people just as it helped me.

Your body is constantly changing. You can suddenly become allergic to something. It's quite common. I ate shrimp my whole life. Had no issues with it then one day full on hives. Now I'm highly allergic. Same with bananas, medications and detergents. I also have random hives that come out of nowhere so I feel the frustration. Stress is partly an issue and the rest is so random it boggles my mind.  I have to carry benedryl with me at all times. I've read that episodes like these are next to impossible to figure out.

I googled this because as we speak I'm breaking out AGAIN. I've suffered from this since I was 6yrs old I'm now 34. No food or detergent allergies. I was once told it was anxiety/stress related. The only thing I have realized is people with Rhematiod Arthritis (which I've had since 17) suffer from um explain hives. It's said to be an indicator that disease is lying dormant in the body which can show its ugly head at any time. I got tired of the benadryl, and I began to carry an Epi-pen. This was working fine once I can began to pinpoint when it was coming. The scary part is my breakouts aren't every couple of months now try twice in one weak! This hasn't ever happen in my life. All I can advise keep the pen and benadryl with u at all times. The inflammation once affected my breathing. Good luck guys prayers to u all!

I have had hives for a year and a half. I have also had swelling around my eyes on and off. I havent tested positive for any allergies and the drs have been pretty dismissive. I have been doing my own research and I am going to see an integrative Dr so they can look at things holistically. Expensive but worth every cent if it cures the itching. I am looking for a Dr that will perform thorough thyroid panel testing and tests for histamine intolerance and candida overgrowth. Do your own research and be your own advocate because unfortunately conventional medicine can be all too quick to label symptoms as 'idiopathic'. Good luck on your journey-hope its not as long as mine

I have literally had them my whole entire life I take Atarax which is a tranquilizer and sometimes they're so indignant that they go through to Atarax I'm at a point where I don't believe that they will ever go away because I'm 45 years old so.

Hi! I'm in 11th grade and have randomly broken out in itchy hives since 8th. It getting to become miserable. Sometimes it'll be a few days in a row with hives or I'll go months without them, I never know. I've gone to the doctor about it, but they can't figure out the problem. The only way they go away is with A LOT of Benadryl.

Well,I guess Im a new member of this club. I have been keeping a journal since my first outbreak. I woke one morning with a swollen upper lip and itchy scalp and underarms. I wrote down all the foods I ate for weeks never finding a culprit. Then the pattern showed itself that I was mostly breaking out at night while in bed. Sure, I changed the sheets, the pillows, bed spread, heck I even slept in different locations but always the same result. Im not sure but I think its stress related. Im self-employed, sales, bills, deadlines, employees, competitors, did I say bills. I went on a regiment of steroids but that hasnt worked. I forgot to mention that this whole episode started at the same time I was fighting several days of extreme heart burn. Not sure if their related or not, but thats the story. I;ve had a prescription to get rid of the heart burn but nothing yet for the hives.

I had hives for 5 straight months! I too was laying in bed started itching my arm and bam I was covered on my right side. I finally fell asleep to only wake up covered in them. I was in and out of the doctors offices. Prescribed me all kinds of allergy meds. Nothing worked! I had my eyes swollen shut twice, always had them on the bottoms of my feet and to the point where I couldn't work some days cause it was so uncomfortable. I ended up changing positions at work and within two weeks I was 100% give free! Doctor said it was stress from work. The moment I left the relief was almost immediate I could tell they were finally clearing up! Do whatever you can to relieve stress. You're possibly more stressed then you actually believe. Best of luck

It could possibly be that the problem is based on internal reactions to your diet. Side effects of an overgrowth of candida can cause hive breakouts. My sister and I both have had hive breakouts and after testing for candida overgrowth, it was necessary to go on the candida diet. Sugars, starches, most fruits (because of their high, natural sugar levels), dairy products are all foods to avoid when on this diet. The reason being, is it "starves" the overgrowth and balances out your bodies candida level.
Just something to consider, since medicine doesn't always "fix" the problem, but just eliminates the surfacing symptoms of a much bigger underlying problem.

Like most people on this post, I recently broke out in hives all over my body without any rhyme or reason.  It went on for 2 weeks before it disappeared and then came back on and off for another 3 weeks.  I'm currently under remission right now from it.  I went to the several doctors and each one told me to take a Claritin and Zyrtec together every morning and night.  When it got real bad that first two weeks, they prescribed me a 7 day supply of prednisone which is a steroid. I don't know what is causing the hives too.  It's very frustrating to deal with the hives when I do get them and they pop up out of the blue.  The dermatologist I went to see about my hives said that he was seeing a lot more people lately regarding severe hives breakouts.  I wish someone would figured this out as to why this is happening.

I started getting mild hives (mainly on my arms) 2 months after i turned 30. I was going through a lot during that time of my life and i thought they were coming due to stress. A few months passed and the stress went away, but the hives still come. Everyday i wake up i have hives in a new spot on my body. I normally on get them on my arms but now they have spread to my neck and back. Ive been to the doctors and they have checked everything. They say i am fine. Ive been taking over the counter meds, but they dont do anything for me. Im thinking i break out at night because my body temperature increases and i get really hot. I exercise regularly, eat properly (im a vegetarian.) Im very frustrated and i just wish there was something i could do to stop these frequent hives!

I have been breaking out with hives off and on for about 10 months. I have been to the different doctors and they have know ideal why...  I have had allergy tests to see what I could be allergic to so far there are no food allergies I have just try to pinpoint these breakouts myself within the past three weeks. I have noticed that every time after I drink red wine I would have breakouts I believe that it's the sulfates in the wine it also could be sulfates in different foods as well .... The doctor prescribed some ointment for me to put on but it doesn't help the itching I sometimes take a Benadryl that is the only thing the seems to help... I don't know what to do!!!!!

there has been excessive spraying (chemtrails) that i've noticed since the beginning of Spring this year (2013).  My son is having a hive outbreak, nothing he's had before.  I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the aluminum, barium, strontium, and even fluoride being sprayed from those airplanes, but I don't know.  If so, there are foods/supplements which are good for getting those heavy metals out of the body, and that info is easy to find online.  Just wanted to throw that out there.  Also, www.geoengineeringwatch.org is where you can find out more about the chemtrails.

I'm having the same problem.  My first out break in hives was from extensive sun exposure without sun screen.. my back looked super burned and tons (at least 30) itchy raised bumps very similiar to mosquito bites appeared up and down my back.  My skin only looked like that for literally an hour though.  Then it all went away.

Ever since then I've been having random outbreaks of the same itchy bumps, only it's not just on my back.  I get them on my stomach, legs, and arms too.

At first I thought they were bug bites but I've recently moved, and I've shared beds with two other people and they are both fine.  It also happens anywhere I am at random times... I'm not allegoric to anything either.  I just rub anti-itch medication on them and they go ago fairly soon.  I've never had them last longer than 12ish hours.

I to have been experiencing this. I get hives randomly throughout the day..once or twice. I doesnt matter where i am. I'll get an itch and notice hives around my neck, underarms, head, and along the bicep muscle. No allergies, no stress. i have 2 dogs but again...it doesnt matter where i am - they just come and go. Somtimes when the itch is too much i will take a benadryl or when its bearable i'll take a claritin or zyrtec.

Hi I started getting hives randomly but I have not changed life style in any way. What have you done since you posted this to stop this on going hive problem?
Avatar universal
Hi!
I just started getting hives randomly all over, but usually on my stomach, back, back of my neck, and lately on one side of my lip. Same thing as you, happened when I was watching tv in bed doing nothing, got itchy, scratched, and they appeared all over my abdomen. I havent changed any of ny daily habits. I'm not allergic to anything and I'm not even terribly sensitive to detergent or perfumes. Also my itch was a normal itch but when I scratched, while it relieved the initial itch, it leaves a kind of weird resonating dull ache. Not really painful, just more uncomfortable. I see you posted this two years ago and was just wondering what has happened since then. I am a young female, working to live (obviously) and put myself through school, with no medical insurance, so If there's any information you can share with me about what you've found out since then as far as diagnosis or treatment or whatever I'd appreciate it! Thanks so much!

Hi i suffered from hives for 2 years on and off. I finally got rid of them for good when i started attacking them from multiple angles. For instance u should be taking at least one allergy medication a day. Loratidine(claritin) and cetirizine (zyrtec) are nice because they don't make u as drowzy. I had to take them both daily with chlorpheneramine and benadryl when it got really bad. Make sure its okay with ur doctor, and all that but when u have suffered for a while with hives u will do it. These taken all together helped to reduce the outbreaks, but that is only part of it.
You have to take cooler showers and use a moisturizer a couple times a day, preferably with oatmeal in it which helps reduce inflammation.
The 3rd part which was difficult for me is the nutrition element. You have to stay away from foods that make inflammation worse. Greasy, sugary, crap at mcdonalds or burger king or wherever is gonna make it worse. This sounds crazy but u are what u eat. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables daily with a lot of water and green tea. Vitamin E has been shone to help as well as Vitamin b-12 and omega 3s from flax seed oil or fish oil. Quercitine can help as well , as well as vitamin C. Exercise more, it is very possible that hives are a manifestation of the body and immune system being unhealthy. Other people swear by homeopathic herbs, others by acupressure and acupuncture. Just keep trying things, its important to keep a good outlook especially with a frustrating problem like this, in which western medicine can only do so much.
Wear cotton, well breathable, loose fitting clothes. Wear nothing if u are home alone because fresh air is good for the skin and the body. Obviously u cant walk around public naked but the concept is more fresh air is good for the skin.
ok so to break it down: multiple allergy meds a day  (if ok with doctor). Use moisturizers with oatmeal and take cool showers. Eat healthy fruits and vegetablesc, cut down on red meats and greasy stuff. Helpful supplements include: vitamin E , vitamin B-12, Vitamin C, quercitine, green tea, omeaga 3s. Exercise more , drink more water, be healthier in general. Good luck!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Hives (medically known as urticaria) are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. They are of two types: acute and chronic(when hives persist for more than 6 weeks). The most likely triggers for acute urticaria are allergies to pets, horses, latex and foods, such as shellfish and nuts, bee or wasp stings, allergies to medicines, Viral infections, such as glandular fever and herpes, dental and sinus infections, fungal infections, blood transfusions and vaccines.

The cause of chronic urticaria is often more difficult to identify. Most cases are called chronic idiopathic urticaria, which means they're caused by the body's unexplainable development of antibodies to itself (auto-antibodies). My sincere advice would be to consult an allergist.
I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep us posted in case you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
