Oral thrush not going away

Oral thrush not going away

Hi all,

I was prescribed antibiotics in november 2010. Soon after, I developed a yellowish/whitish coating on my tongue. I went to see a demonologist and was told it was oral thursh (I have not had this before). I was prescribed various mouthwashes and they did not work. I was then prescribed Nystatin oral suspension (3 bottles) and using it helped, but it did not completely clear the thrush. I went to my GP and he then prescribed Fluconazole tablets for me (50mg for 22 days). This has not cleared the thrush either.

Up till now, my thrush is still not cleared (since november 2010). I am afraid that it might have become very resistant to medication. Could you please advise me on what to do? Are there any other medications that I can take? Or should ask my GP to increase the dosage of the Fluconazole?

In any case, here is what my tongue looks like:

Thank you!

Hello, More likely to be an "yellow hairy tongue" and nothing else! Temporary, harmless problem. B-complex vitamins should do. Do consult your doc.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. In that photo, the coating on my tongue was stained yellow by Nystatin. The coating is actually whitish now. When scratched off, it will keep coming back. My doctor said if it is indeed thrush, it should clear on its own. Is that true?

Why not get a scraping done to look for the budding yeasts? By the way  hairy tongue may also appear brown, white or yellow. Your doctor is indeed right that with proper oral hygiene it should get alright.

Hi! Yup, had 2 swab test done. Came back negative. The dermatologist said it could be that because i'm on medication, hence it was negative. It's weird because this came about only after I took antibiotics.

Hello,
To rule out any thrush infection, get an examination done from your doctor and get a KOH examination of the scrapings done of these white coatings.

The other possibility is of black hairy tongue which appears as a result of the growth of fungus on the surface of the tongue. To confirm the diagnosis, I suggest you to consult a dermatologist.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Jodi, I see from your question that you went to the 'demonologist' Thank God that they are dermatologists and hopefully nothing to do with demons! (Just joking, I do lots of typographic errors myself) Cheers!
