Peeling Hands After Allergic Reaction

by splashk, Feb 22, 2008 03:11PM
I had an acute allergic reaction on Jan. 2, 2008 to Penicillin, my hands swelled and were burning . I was hospitalized and given intervenous steroids. I continued on the sterdoids by mouth along with Zyrtec and Benedril. My hands completely peeled and everything was getting better when suddenly from out of nowhere the swelling came back to my hands and the burning, I went back to the ER and was admitted again, now I have been home two days and my hands are going to peel again. My doctor is sending me to an Allergy clinic, however they are telling me I have to bo completely off the antihistimines for the tests to come out correctly. I am affraid to do anything because I don't know if the whole thing will start over. Is there anyway there is still Penicillin in my system?

Hi,

How are your symptoms?

Are your hands still peeling?

You may have an adverse drug reaction to penicillin in the form of a drug hypersensitivity. Avoid any medications that contain penicillin and seek consult with an allergologist as soon as possible. By this time, the penicillin must have been excreted from the body given that you have stopped taking it from the onset of your symptoms. Other triggers have to be ruled out however and the allergologist will be able to help.

Hi,
Yes my hands are peeling in the palms for the second time in a month. Now the boyyom of my feet have that waxey feel and are burning and itching, they may peel too. I spoke to a pharmacist and he said that my body may be reacting as if the penicillin is still there. This is so mind boggling, i go next Monday to an allergy clinic for tests, its just that I have to be off the benedril for at least a week, and right now that is the only thing that keeps me from scratching. I am still on steroids orally it is a taper. Thank You for writing.
