Peeling skin on the palm

Hello,
I have a bizarre problem of peeling of skin on my palms. It happens just after winter ends and summer sets in. I have been noticing this every year during the months of March. Hope I get the cause and remedy for this problem in this forum. I have attached a photo as well.
Thanks

Hello there,
thank you all for the discussion and information posted. I have this condition since the beginning of 2012. I tried various skin doctors and their recommended medicaments for approximately 2 yrs and have a cabinet full of cream tubes half used to show for it but nothing else. I've stopped going to them for that reason. I've learned some new facts and ideas of how to treat which I will start trying out immediately from your forum. The arsenic poisoning sounds very serious and I have no idea about if that could be an issue for me - I live in Germany where the ground water is supposedly excellent/free from dangerous substances. But in consideration of what you say I will try to get some kind of analysis done concerning allergies and the like. What kind of doctor does that kind of thing?
My condition is just like the hands above but mostly around the finger tips.
I play the violin and this condition makes my life extremely difficult at times, especially considering I play professionally. Thanks again. I will stay tuned here...

Hello Sciman2, I'm so thankful for your reply. For everyone that is on this forum you need to check your metals through urine analysis. I just did testing and found out I have the same as Sciman2. I've been fighting this issue for over 10 years. It's the exact same symptoms as most of you. I don't have pain or itching but just peeling skin. Arsenic poisoning affects the hands and feet.

I am a 60 year old male who's had this condition for a long time. After visiting several dermatologists (eczema, dishydrosis, cirrohosis, etc) and several different types of treatments without success, I finally found the best answer yet. EXFOLIATIVE KERATOLYSIS.Doesn't hurt burn or itch. Just peels. I learned it occurs only on hands and feet..I have this on both. I've had steroid creams, steroid injections, UV therapy, all with very short term results. I have now been able to beat it into submission by using 2 creams. Gold Bond heel balm and a cream with Eura. Have applied liberally multiple times per day and liberally before bed and wearing exam gloves. It took about 3 weeks, but it is almost gone and my hands look normal again, except for a few small places. There is no real CURE, but for me there is real RELIEF

Call it what you will: exfoliative keratitis, contact dermatitis, psoriatic arthritis - I had this problem (or one similar to it) for several years and tried everything to no avail. It turned out to be arsenic poisoning - one of the most common poisonings in the word due to widespread contamination of ground-water from mining operations around the world. Arsenic is also a common pesticide that is used on unregulated agricultural crops. Mine was relatively constant - not regularly cyclical, however - but your patterns of activity could give you some insight into possible exposure. I did a couple of courses of chelation therapy with rigorous chemical analysis of urine and documented the excretion of Arsenic - presto: problem solved. Similar analysis helped identify at least one source - Shrimp from the Louisiana Gulf. If you can't get a good chelator, just alkalinizing the urine with a tsp of baking soda with a tsp of vitamin C will help excrete cations like arsenic. Hope this helps

Thank you  Stevet Bay after 1.5 year I came to know what type of problem I am having "exfoliative keratolysis". As I have been advised I have used vaious steriods and medicines but I didnt find any cure yet. I also used neem oil and petroleum jelly and cocunut oil too but the thing remains the same. Thank you, now I can find a good appropriate cure  of my problem.

No Chibuikem, you won't outgrow it. I am Nigerian too, over 60 and mine come just about the same time, late December till about February, give and take one or two weeks. And its been on over 40 years. Two/three years now it has been almost non existent or very mild and I thought it was gone. This year however it is back with a vengeance which made me Google it. Mine however does not itch nor is it painful; just peels off and gets rough when dry. Made me stop shaking hands when the condition starts. I will try remedies stated above and see if it helps. I have learned to simply live with it and use Vaseline regularly. Not sure there is much more you can do about it.

Hello, I'm Nigerian and I have the same problem. Mine usually starts at the end of December and lasts through January. I thought I was the only one who had it but it seems I'm not alone. This is probably the 4th or 5th year its happening and I hope I someday outgrow it or find a cure. It's very uncomfortable.

My hands look a LOT like the picture in this thread.  For the past 10 years they have peeled in cycles.  It takes about a month because after one spot peels, it spreads and large areas of my palms are regenerated.  Finger pads especially.  There can be anywhere from 2 months to 12 months between cycles.  Shedding is prone to happen if I've had sweaty palms for hours or days at a time (stress), dry weather, hot tubs and swimming pools

Untold hours of Googling and reading forums... the past 10 years.  I swear this condition changed me socially because I was conscious of my palms shedding.  It started when I was 14, probably from the stress of starting high school.  I would avoid holding hands with girls and became all aloof and idealistic to make up for the fact I wasn't getting poon i knew I potentially had in the bag, because I'm a reasonably attractive dude.

Anyway I finally found the NAME of the condition.  Trying to get the word out for anybody who, like me, always pays with a credit card instead of cash so that I don't have to expose my palm to accept change.

exfoliative keratolysis

Best remedy is lactic acid and urea.  For example Wal-Mart and Rite Aid carry Amlactin.  Strange smell, but it helps!!

Vitamin E oil does wonders. Grab a bottle from a local health foods store, and apply it where your skin is peeling.... Leave it on for 25-30 minutes, gently massaging once in a while, then wipe off excess with a towel and put on a gentle, unscented lotion. -OR- put it on before bed, and keep it on, wearing gloves to bed.

I've had this condition for 15 years now.  It happens every year X2 like clockwork.  The cycle has just begun again.  Every year I look online to see if there is a cure / treatment and every year there isn't.  This looks horrible (especially if you have to show your hands or shake someones hand) and for me is extremely itchy and painful.  My dermatologist says "when they are moist dry them and when they are dry moisten them"  that's all he offered.
Good luck with this people.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Various possibilities such symptoms are trauma and allergic or irritant contact dermatitis like washing dishes without wearing gloves, contact with harsh detergents, soaps and lotions that contain perfume can cause hands to become irritated and peel.Sometimes cold, dry air can cause  peeling and dermatitis or fungal infections can also cause peeling. In your case I feel that it can be due to eczema or contact dermatitis.

Wash the areas several times with fresh water. Do not use any cosmetic products at the sites. You can apply some calamine lotion at the rash as it will help in soothing the skin. For mild-moderate symptoms a weak steroid may be used (e.g. hydrocortisone as dermacort), whilst more severe cases require a higher-potency steroid (e.g. clobetasol propionate, fluocinonide).

Symptoms can be exacerbated by dryness of the skin. Use good quality moisturizers to prevent moisture loss from the skin. During the day, hydrate and protect hands from sun damage and sunspots with a protective and moisturizing cream. At night, repair them with creams formulated from glycolic acid—a must for improving skin texture and tone. For a more intensive nighttime treatment, apply cream and then cover hands with gloves or socks.

If still the symptoms do not improve then pls get a clinical examination done by a dermatologist. Fungal infections have to be ruled out then.

Hope it helps. Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional queries.Kind regards.
