Penile Cancer? HPV? HSV? HELP!

by dr_g, Aug 27, 2006 12:00AM
Dear Doctor,

In february of 2006 my penis became irritated and red around the head.  In examining it because of this I noticed three tear like structures on the bottom side of the frenulum each about 3mm in diameter.  I went to a physician at my university clinic.  He said that it didn't look like herpes, but tested me for Chlymidia, Ghonorrea, and HIV (all negative).  He told me to use cortizone cream on the red area around the head and to retun in a couple of months if the structures did not go away.  He said that my problem didn't look like herpes and "I can't be sure, but I don't think it is."  I followed his advice, but I started working for the summer before I could get back to him about the tear structures.  They have not changed in size, shape, or appearance.  They have never had a wet center or any sign of infection.  It is now six months later with no change in the lesions.  I remember catching my penis in my zipper slightly one drunken evening around that time (not actually catching in the zipper but more pinching and then lowering).  My questions are as follows.  1. How worried should I be about HSV.  I understand that tests for it are sometimes sketchy and perhaps my university Dr. was just covering his legal *** when he told me he couldn't be sure.  2. I have heard that lesions on the penis that do not dissapear can be a sign of penile cancer.  I have smoked infrequently (usually with drinks) for about two years.  How concerned should I be about this.  3.  Is there any test/procedure that I should ask about when returning to my university health center that could dispell these fears.  4.  I am an often paranoid/hypochondriac individual.  How can my hopes for a continued life both sexual and otherwise be assured?  Thanks in advance.  A. C.

There is absolutely nothing in your description that sounds either like herpes or like cancer.  If your hypochondria is troubling you to this extent, you need assistance with that.  If you want, see a dermatologist or urologist you trust to look at your penis.  Then forget about it.  If you can't, you should seek counseling.

Good luck.

I have the same problem dude and was told by my GP (twice) to put it out of my mind.
I know it's not an easy thing to do, especially when it gets in your head.
So did your doc say that the tears would be there for good? or that they would heal on their own?
Mine didn't subscribe anything for them and said they were simply a variation of normal.
Hope things work out for ya bud - post up any developments.
