Penile Rash

Penile Rash

Four days ago a rash appeared on the shaft of my penis, and I'm trying to figure out what it is.  The rash is extremely itchy, like poison oak, but there are no distinct bumps or sores and no pus.  The surface is uniformly swollen, red, and a little rough.  The itchiness comes and goes depending on what I'm doing, but when it comes it is irresistable and I can't help but scratch it for a little while.  I don't want to put any sort of cream on it until I know what it is.  Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi,

Try to avoid scratching to prevent secondary infection. Differentials may include irritation, balanitis, fungal infection and skin condition such as psoriasis. Balanitis or inflammation may be caused by sensitivity to a new soap or shower gel or having  intercourse with a woman with thrush. Fungal infection, on the other hand, is also common. Fungus thrives in warm, moist conditions.  For proper diagnosis, have this evaluated further by your doctor for proper management. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause.

Take care and keep us posted.
