Persistent Rash on Breast

by lilithrose, Sep 21, 2008 10:34PM
Hi Everyone,
I have had a persistent pinkish red rash on one breast for over 1 1/2 years now. It does not itch or otherwise bother me, and seems to have spread very slowly. The rash itself appears to have very small raised areas, similar to the texture of a basketball, but the pinkish color is blotchy and all around that area. I have seen a nurse-practitioner about the problem, and she has prescribed both hydrocortisone cream and steriod cream on separate occasions, neither of which had any effect on the rash. I have also tried things like face wash, acne medication, and things of that nature with no results. Much of the rash is on an area of the breast which does not come in contact with my bra or clothing, nor does it rub against any other part of my body. I have changed fabric detergents and pretty much ruled out contact dermatitis. The nipple area does not seem to be affected. My concerns include the possibility of breast cancer as well as the fact that it is unsightly and makes me self-conscious in a bathing suit. I would also like to note that I have seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp, but the breast rash does not look or feel the same, does not itch, and is not flaky or scaly. I would appreciate any help in this matter.
Thanks,
lilithrose

I recently got a diagnosis from my dermatologist, in case anyone was interested. She wasn't sure what it was at first, so took a small biopsy and sent it off to a lab. They decided that it was reticular erythamatous mucinosis, which is benign, somewhat odd or rare, has no solidly known cause or cure, and may go away someday. I am glad that it is not serious, although I am still self-conscious about it.

Great to hear that everything is okay!  Glad you had a biopsy.  There is a milk duct cancer that presents with a rash, so it is a good thing you had the biopsy.  I just read your comment now.  Take care.
