Petechiae from temper tantrum?

by SupermanBelle, Jan 13, 2009 02:17PM
My child gets tiny pinpoint red dots on his face when he has a major temper tantrum.  He does not get them frequently, but when he does the dots cover all over his face.  The dots go away within a couple of days but it concerns me.  I brought him in to see his pediatrician before and told me the dots were from broken capillaries because he strained himself.  A friend of mine said she had them whenever she threw fits as a child.  Is this normal?  Could there be an underlying issue that is causing this?

Hi,

Petechiae are pinpoint flat round red spots under the skin surface caused by intradermal hemorrhage. They usually do not blanch when pressed upon. The most common cause of petechiae is through physical trauma such as a hard bout of coughing, vomiting or crying which can result in facial petechiae, especially around the eyes. Petechiae in this instance are completely harmless and usually disappear within a few days.

If it persists, complete blood count with platelet count may be done to rule out other causes. Take care and regards.
