Petechiae

by jrb1982, Apr 20, 2009 08:59AM
I am a 26f, good health besides allergies/chronic sinus issues, normal weight, history of problems with health anxiety.  I have had a few petechiae on and off for 2 months now, usually no more than a handful at a time.  They occur mostly on my stomach, though right now I have 2 on my stomach, 1 on my right leg, and 1 on my chest.  They seem to always fade within a few days.  At the time they first occurred, I had been fighting off a nasty cold for a week.  The nurse practitioner looked at them, agreed they might be petechiae, but that they did not look concerning to her.  A few days later the doctor ordered bloodwork to ease my fears about leukemia, and the CBC was normal.  I have no fevers, night sweats, bleeding, fatigue, etc, or really anything to worry about, though the 2 or 3 petechiae at a time have come and gone since then.  Does anyone know what else could cause a few petechaie with normal bloodwork?  The doctor and nurse practitioner both showed NO concern about the previous spots, but I'm very worried.  Could they somehow be stress related?  Could the fact that I did not have the CBC until the spots were fading make a difference?  I don't want to hassle the doctor continually if there is nothing to worry about, but it was frustrating that she seemed so flippant about them and couldn't really explain why I have them.  Anyone else experience this?
Thanks in advance!

I wish I had that few spots, I have clusters of red dots on my stomach, back, thighs, every where and I'm itching too.  I wondered if sun exposure is causibng both?  can anyone else relate to this?

Hello,
A common cause of petechiae is a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).Causes of a low platelet count include autoimmune disorders viral infections such as mononucleosis, side effect of certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, bone marrow disorders, such as leukemia and infection of the bloodstream.

In your case ,it can be due to the viral cold infections. These should resolve in a few days.If the symptoms persist then the other causes have to be ruled out.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional doubts.Kind regards.
