Problems with rash/bump diagnosis

by detroitguy, Jul 12, 2004 12:00AM
I'm a gay man, and I'm afraid I've picked up an STD but not sure what it is.

I discovered 2 small bumps/pimples near my anus and felt some stinging when I urinated.  I went to the health clinic and they said the bumps were 2 small genital warts (which they froze off).  They also prescribed a strong antibiotic for the stinging when I urinated. I also had a very slight rash around my anus (I had to point it out to the doctor).

My gonorrehea & syphilis tests came back negative (though this was before the rash really developed).  The pain when urinating intensified after my appointment and then disappeared after about 5-6 days.

A few days after my appointment the rash became worse with small pimples that oozed fluid.  I also had some pain in my groin lymph nodes.

The rash spread to inflame the entire area between my butt cheeks.  It was so bad I couldn't really walk without pain (I think the worse area was where the "warts" were frozen off.

I went to the E.R. and they debated but thought it was herpes (though they didn't take a test)...it was somewhat difficult see b/c I had put some diaper rash ointment on it.  They prescribed 10 days of Valtrex.

After my 7th day of Valtrex, I had a strong burning and itching sensation on my scrotum (which turned bright red) and noticed more bumps on my inner thigh (which did not fill with any fluid).  But the skin between my scrotum and thigh has started to peel (after about 2 days).

I've also noticed very small pin-***** sized white bumps at the edge of my anus (which itch).

I have a doctor appt in five days and will get a blood test for herpes, but wonder what else this could be (perhaps a fungal infection or something else) and want to be informed for my doctor discussion.

Of course, I would love to hear it isn't herpes which has me quite worried.

Recapping my symptoms:
* Two small bumps diagosed as genital warts (and burned off)
* Pain when urinating (continued after 5 days even when taking the strong 8-pill, one dose antibiotic)
* Bumps with fluid between butt cheecks leading to complete red rash in entire area
* Pain in groin lymph nodes
* Burning rash on scrotum and a few small pimples (no fluid)which itched and then peeled on inner thigh (not scrotum) after two days (while on Valtrex)
* Numerous small white pin-***** bumps at anus (just noticed the other day)

Thank you.

I'm afraid I can't put all these phenomena together with any degree of confidence.  They do not sound like herpes, especially since a course of Valtrex hasn't helped much, and Valtrex works extremely well.  Perhaps this is a yeast infection, perhaps aggravating the sensitive skin in the region.  Your doctor should, and presumably will, order herpes cultures and blood tests, along with any other relevant investigations.  The doctor should undoubtedly clarify matters.

Take care,

Dr. Rockoff
